Carla C.'s Journey:
Transforming Challenges to Opportunity
Meet Carla C.*, a vibrant and determined 52-year-old woman from Colombia, currently residing in the City of Gaithersburg. With her dynamic personality, Carla has always been driven to achieve her goals, but her journey in the United States has not been without its challenges.
Since arriving in the U.S., Carla has primarily worked in residential housekeeping. While she has a strong educational background and training in Colombia that qualifies her for higher-level positions, the lack of U.S. certifications and her limited English proficiency have held her back. Despite being grateful for the work, she had secured, Carla knew from the start that she is capable of so much more and understood that a higher income would not only reduce her financial struggles but also help her save for a brighter future.
Overcoming the language barrier had been one of Carla's significant hurdles. Though, not yet fully bilingual when joining IW VSP, Carla’s dedication to studying and practicing her English skills paid off—today, she communicates effectively. Adapting to a new culture has also been a journey for Carla. She has made impressive strides in understanding how things work in her new “home,” learning how to navigate social interactions and adjust her ways of being according to different social interactions. This cultural adaptability has been crucial in her aims to work in customer service.
With the support of IW VSP’s Paid Training Program, Carla achieved a major milestone by completing training in early childhood education and becoming CPR/First Aid certified. Armed with these credentials, Carla landed a well-paying job as a babysitter, earning $20 per hour. However, her success was short-lived. Without any warning, her employers informed her that the child she cared for was old enough for daycare, and her services were no longer needed.
Carla suspected that her termination was linked to her request for paid time off—something her colleagues in childcare were able to receive. Determined not to let this setback define her, she reached out to IW VSP once more for assistance. Her vocational counselor helped her update her resume and provided personalized support to help her navigate her job search process and move forward in resolving her unemployment. During this process, Carla was also connected with labor lawyers to explore any potential legal options regarding her sudden dismissal.
Shortly after returning to IW VSP, Carla found a part-time nanny position that pays $30 an hour. In this role, she cares for three children, working independently with the family. Her responsibilities include supporting the family by looking after the youngest children until they head off to daycare. Carla’s journey is one of resilience and true transformation of challenge to opportunity. With each obstacle she overcame, and continues to grow closer to achieving financial stability.
