Fasil E.'s Journey:

A Journey of Hope and New Beginnings

Meet Fasil E.*, a 74-year-old man from Ethiopia whose life is a testament to determination and courage. Fleeing the civil war in his homeland, he left behind everything—his family, his children, and his beloved wife, who has since passed away. Though he hasn’t seen his children in years, Fasil remains committed to supporting them from afar while nurturing connections within the Ethiopian community in Silver Spring.

Living independently, Fasil faces daily challenges, especially regarding his health in relation to his dietary needs. To address his barriers, his social worker referred him to the Interfaith Works Vocational Services Program (IW VSP), which has been instrumental and provided him with grocery gift cards and connected him with local food pantries. Despite these resources, many of the foods available did not meet his specific dietary requirements, leading him to apply for state food vouchers and medical assistance.

Against all odds, Fasil’s resilience has enabled him to secure a part-time job, which helps him cover essential expenses like housing, healthcare, and food. The Vocational Services Program has also supported him in reloading his senior transportation card, allowing him to travel by bus or metro at a discounted rate. While he enjoys walking, when possible, public transport is his most practical option.

One of Fasil's greatest achievements, as a client of IW VSP, has been obtaining U.S. citizenship. Initially, this goal felt unattainable due to the complexities and costs of the application process. However, with the program's support, he navigated this journey successfully. In October 2023, he proudly celebrated becoming a U.S. naturalized citizen. The program even covered the fee for him to obtain a passport for identification. The joy on Fasil’s face was a heartwarming moment for his vocational counselor and everyone involved in his journey, as he frequently expresses deep gratitude for the assistance he received.

For Fasil, maintaining his legal status is vital. It opened doors to essential state services and allowed him to keep his job, ensuring stability in his life. At his age, he will not receive a pension, so continuing to work is necessary. However, becoming a naturalized citizen has profoundly changed his outlook on life.

Fasil's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. With the support of the Vocational Services Program, he is not just surviving; he is thriving.
