Meet Jessi R.:
A Journey of Determination and Growth
Meet Jessi R.*, a 41-year-old mother from El Salvador who embarked on a transformative journey when she joined the Interfaith Works Vocational Services Program (IW VSP) in January 2022. From her first day, Jessi's dedication and ambition shone through. With the support of her vocational counselor, she received assistance to enroll in the ESOL for Adults class at Montgomery College to improve her English proficiency.
Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Jessi immersed herself in her classes, fueled by her dream of becoming a Teacher's Assistant in the Montgomery County Public School System. This wasn’t just about learning a new language; it was a crucial step toward a brighter future for herself and her family.
Through the Paid Training Program, Jessi not only honed her language skills but also received a stipend of $15 for each hour of class she completed. This financial support helped her manage her household expenses while she pursued her educational and career goals.
Before long, Jessi's hard work paid off. She secured a full-time position at Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in a General Labor role, which paid $16 per hour –a job she landed with encouragement and support from her vocational counselor. Though grateful for the opportunity, Jessi’s eyes were set on a higher goal. Her true passion lay in education, and she was determined to transition into a role where she could inspire students and support teachers.
While balancing her new job, Jessi remained an active participant in the Vocational Services Program. She continued to improve her English skills and sought the qualifications necessary for her dream career. With additional support from the Paid Training Program, she enrolled in Instituto de Educación Infantil (INEDUIN) to become certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED. And in August 2023, just seven months after starting her position in General Labor, Jessi achieved a significant milestone: she was hired as a Para-Educator with MCPS, earning $21.99 per hour with full-time benefits. Even as she celebrated this accomplishment, Jessi continued to take ESOL classes independently, recognizing the importance of mastering the language for her professional growth.
At her new job, Jessi also participated in monthly check-ins with the program, ensuring she had the support she needed as she embraced her new role.
Jessi’s journey is a testament to resilience and ambition. With the help of the Vocational Services Program, she is not just building a career; she is laying the foundation for a brighter future for herself and her children.
