MacArthur Fellow Mauricio Miller To Deliver Keynote

Rockville, MD — Interfaith Works 20th annual Companies Caring Breakfast on April 20 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center will shine the spotlight on several Montgomery County leaders for their contributions to Interfaith Works and to the greater community. Interfaith Works is a leading social service agency in Montgomery County, working to help vulnerable residents lift themselves out of poverty and homelessness. The event attracts more than 300 leaders in the governmental, political, nonprofit and business communities each year.

Keynote speaker will be Mauricio Lim Miller, a MacArthur “genius” grant recipient for his innovative approach to addressing family poverty. WUSA-9 anchor Mike Hydeck will emcee the event. Interfaith Works will honor previous breakfast awardees over the past 20 years. Interfaith Works CEO Shane C. Rock will provide an update on where Interfaith Works is headed. County Executive Isiah Leggett is scheduled to attend the breakfast and present Interfaith Works with a proclamation.

Interfaith Works will honor all past awardees, as well as the following 2017 winners:
Community Partner Award: Ingleside at King Farm
Ingleside at King Farm in Rockville is an engaged senior living community and home to a huge crew of active and passionate volunteers. Working together, they have made a big difference in the lives of men, women and children who rely on Interfaith Works. This includes in-kind donations, assembling layettes monthly, making diaper bags, bibs and blankets. These layettes are provided for free to needy expecting moms in Montgomery County, who otherwise would have very little to welcome their new babies. Ingleside staff also regularly volunteer at Interfaith Works programs as part of their Days of Service throughout the year.

Humanitarians of the Year: Anne & Rick Rudman and Family
Anne & Rick and their three children have supported Interfaith Works faithfully as volunteers and financial supporters. Anne, Rick and their four children (ages 12 through 21) are deeply engaged in making sure Montgomery County neighbors have opportunities to succeed. Anne serves on the board of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region in Montgomery County and is a strong advocate for responses to help Montgomery residents in distress achieve economic security. The Rudman family has played a crucial role in opening the new Interfaith Works Clothing Center, which serves more than 13,000 Montgomery County residents each year. Once the family learned about the great work going on at the center, they immediately donated funds to build the new entrance ramp. Without this donation, the opening of the new center would have been greatly delayed. The Rudman family resides in Potomac, Md.

Corporate Champion Award: Comcast
Comcast Corporation is a global media and technology company with two primary businesses, Comcast Cable and NBC Universal. Comcast for many years has been a committed, generous supporter of multiple Interfaith Works’ programs. In addition, the company’s employees are active volunteers at the Interfaith Clothing Center through their annual Comcast Cares Day, contributing materials as well as time to help programs succeed. Comcast has produced pro-bono videos for Interfaith Works to help the agency tell its story in a powerful way. Comcast is committed to closing the digital divide that isolates millions of low-income Americans and has provided their Internet Essentials program to the families served by Interfaith Works.

Local Corporate Champion Award: Forrester Construction
Forrester Construction, based in Rockville, is an award-winning Engineering News-Record Top 400 and Washington Business Journal Top 15 general contractor offering construction management, preconstruction and design build services. Forrester believes that successful businesses benefit from a vibrant, flourishing community. Forrester’s Days of Service at the Interfaith Works Women’s Center have been transforming. Donating their time, Forrester employees have repaired drywall, painted, installed wall guards, fixed window treatments, power washed, installed flooring, and more. When the Interfaith Works Women’s Center moved into a new location earlier this year, Forrester Team Members rallied to lend their support, donating essential home items like sheets, blankets, and towels. Forrester volunteers also have served residents meals. The company’s contributions and commitment have enhanced the lives of those served by Interfaith Works and contributed overall to making a stronger Montgomery County.

Keynote Speaker: Mauricio Lim Miller, Family Independence Initiative

Mauricio Miller headshot_croppedMauricio Lim Miller founded Family Independence Initiative (FII) in 2001 with a mission to support and accelerate low-income families’ own efforts to improve their social and economic mobility. A first-generation immigrant, Mauricio researched the histories of immigrant, migrant, and indigenous communities that managed to rise from intense poverty to middle-class standing. He found something simple, yet extraordinary: Pathways to success require a group effort. Families turned to extended family and friends for support and resources, and followed the example of the successful families around them. In recognition of his unconventional approach, Mauricio was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” fellowship in 2012. Prior to founding FII, Mauricio spent 22 years as the Director of Asian Neighborhood Design, a community development agency in San Francisco and Oakland.
