When Caroline Touchton opens the front door of her third-floor apartment at Ingleside at King Farm continuing-care retirement community, she’s never sure what she will find. Since she moved into the community in 2009, residents regularly leave bags of clothing and other gently used items by her door. Her neighbors know that Touchton, affectionately dubbed the “caring bag lady,” will be sure the donations end up in good hands. She delivers their bags of donated items to our Interfaith Clothing Center in Rockville and to other charities.
“A lot of people here don’t drive, so I’m happy to deliver their donations,” says Touchton, who makes deliveries at least twice a month to the Interfaith Clothing Center. “I like being fuel efficient, so I wait until I have a car full to take over.”
She adds, “Doing this makes me feel good, like I’m doing something for the people of this county. Sometimes I come in the clothing center’s back door with bags of donations and see them leave through the front door,” in the hands of vulnerable families who need them.
Thank you for your commitment and spirit of community, Caroline!
