More than 80 volunteers from Choice Hotels transformed our Wilkins Avenue Women’s Assessment Center in Rockville last month through an amazing array of projects. The full day of service was facilitated by Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit that connects corporate volunteers with worthy projects.
Choice replaced the mattresses and bedding on all 65 beds at the shelter, providing brightly colored sheets and leaving a goody bag of personal care items on each bed. Choice employees also painted cheerful, inspirational murals for the walls, put up corkboards for each resident, and constructed shelving to help organize storage and laundry areas. The carpenters among the group built new benches and planter boxes to brighten up outside the shelter, and those with green thumbs freshened up the landscaping. County Councilmember Nancy Floreen stopped by during the day of service to praise the Choice employees’ dedication and generosity.
Diana Bernhardt, clinical director at the Wilkins shelter, said, “It was a great event — so much fun! And the residents were extremely happy with the dorm rooms, laundry rooms, new benches and the gift bags.” We are grateful for the ongoing partnership with Choice and Rebuilding Together, who worked hard last year on refreshing the décor at our Interfaith Clothing Center.
