Housing
Interfaith Works' Housing Services provide transitional and permanent housing for disabled adults and families leaving the emergency shelter system through the following programs:
- Horizon House
Horizon House provides permanent housing for formerly homeless adults in homes scattered throughout Montgomery County, MD and is currently housing 25 adults. The program provides case management for every resident in order to work on individualized goals for greater self-sufficiency. Many clients are working or involved in education and job training programs. Although the program can be permanent for those who choose to say, more than 90% move to more independent housing within three years. Some residents have even purchased moderately priced homes with the guidance of Horizon House staff. Horizon House is a project of Hope Housing, administered by Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless since 2002.
- Welcome Homes
Welcome Homes provides a safe and secure environment for up to 8 older women, many of whom have been homeless for years - living on the streets for decades - with no place to go. The program provides case management and 24 hour staff to meet the needs of the women who call this it home. The case manager is a licensed social worker who develops an on-goin service plan to optimize each resident's independence. The residents enjoy field trips to movies, lunch, museums and other fun outings away from home. Welcome Homes has recently moved to a beautifully renovated home in the Aspen Hill area.
- Watkins Mill
Watkins Mill provides safe transitional housing for up to 8 homeless women who have a mental health disability. The program provides case management, meals, transportation and referrals to permanent housing. Twenty-four hour staff are available to handle emergencies and client concerns whenever they arise. Watkins Mill is a nurturing environment where residents are empowered to maintain mental and physical health while preparing for a successful transition into permanent housing.
- Interfaith Housing Coalition
Interfaith Housing Coalition is a wholly owned subsidiary of Interfaith Works and is an interfaith, non-profit 501(c)3 organization. IHC provides supported housing to formerly homeless families in 26 housing units scattered throughout the County. Families are supported by dedicated professional case managers, and when ready, families are linked with teams of volunteer mentors through Interfaith Works' Friends in Action program, who give guidance, support and friendship as families work towards economic independence and social stability.
IHC currently owns 16 properties around Montgomery County, both townhouses and apartments. In addition, ten IHC apartments are part of a partnership with Poretsky Building Group, in a small apartment community in Wheaton. IHC rents these homes to families referred by shelters and Montgomery County's Department of Social Services. Families are accepted into our program based on their expressed desire to work towards economic and family stability.
Our Mission is to advocate an improved quality of life for homeless families in Montgomery County:
- Empowering homeless families in Montgomery County,
- Enabling families to move from shelters to stable, independent housing, and
- Preparing families for independence outside the program.
In collaboration with a diversity of local congregations and community organizations, IHC provides comprehensive case management and housing to ensure that families leave the program with the resources to earn a living wage, manage cash flow, debt, and savings, retain affordable long-term housing and build a secure future.
As a condition of being accepted into the program, each family must agree to work with a case manager to identify and implement family established goals. Program goals are tailored to each family's unique situation. Families are also given the opportunity to work with mentoring teams from our award winning program FRIENDS IN ACTION (FIA) to help them with various goals as well as providing extra support. The mentors are recruited and trained from many congregations throughout Montgomery County. With the support of a FIA mentoring team, Interfaith Housing Coalition feels the families will be one step closer to independence in their own home.
