Neighbors helping neighbors in Montgomery County, Maryland since 1972
FAQs
  1. Is Interfaith Works a religious organization?
No! We are a non-sectarian organization that has many programs through which neighbors help neighbors in need in Montgomery County, Maryland through donations of time, funds and in-kind contributions. Over 7,000 individuals volunteer with our programs each year, including corporate and civic groups, individuals and groups from our membership – over 140 congregations of many faith traditions who find common ground through service to neighbors. Won’t you join us?

  2. Is Interfaith Works a government agency?
No! Many of our programs receive public support from federal, state, county and municipal funding sources, but we are an independent 501c3 agency. Government contracts and grants account for less than 33% of our financial support each year.

  3. I am interested in volunteering. Are there opportunities for me to help?
YES! Please click here to visit our Volunteer page. Volunteers are critical to our programs, and we have opportunities for individuals, families or even larger groups. Our programs qualify for community service credit with most schools and we have many opportunities for youth. Some jobs are ongoing and many are just one-time needs. If you have a special skill, we are sure to be able to put it to good use. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for more information at volunteer@iworksmc.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

  4. Montgomery County is affluent. Why do people in Montgomery County need help?
Montgomery County is home to almost 1 million people. While many residents are affluent, many individuals and families struggle economically because the cost of living here is one of the highest in the nation and workers in low-wage jobs cannot easily support their families. Some startling facts:

    • Average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the County is $1,200/month. That is the entire paycheck of someone working full-time at minimum wage.
    • Our first-rate school system educates 140,000 students each year. Almost one in four of these students – over 30,000 children – qualify for Free and Reduced Meals through the Federal government program for low income children.
    • On any given day, 1,500 residents of the County are homeless – one-third of whom are children. Over the course of a year, 4,500 people in our community experience homelessness.
    • Over 70,000 residents of the County each year qualify to receive food from local food banks. Hunger is a big problem too.

  5. I need help or know of a family in need. Can you help?
Yes! Please contact our Congregation & Community Services office and they can direct you to the right person or office. If one of our programs will not suit your needs, we partner with many other providers,non-profits and government agencies in the community who help people in need. The County’s Crisis Center (240-777-4000) at 1301 Piccard Drive in Rockville is also a source for referrals through the Department of Health and Human Services and is open 24 hours a day for both telephone and walk-in services.

  6. I have clothing I want to donate. Do you need it?
Yes. Our Interfaith Clothing Centers in Rockville and Gaithersburg are open to receive donations from 9:00am to 5:00pm. We are closed Tuesdays and Sundays, and on select holidays. In addition, we have a partnership with the Clothing Recycling Company (CRC) who operates over 40 “big green bins” scattered throughout the County. Clothing dropped in these bins are collected and processed by CRC, who provides our two centers with needed inventory free of charge on an as-needed basis. Please Click Here for more detailed information about our Clothing Centers. Thank you for your support!
